Two layers of AI in radiology

AI does not start at the report.

Most conversations about AI in radiology begin at interpretation. In practice the first and most consequential layer sits earlier — in how the image is acquired and reconstructed.

Layer 01

At acquisition and reconstruction

Experience includes Deep Resolve on Siemens, AIR Recon DL on GE, SmartSpeed on Philips. These tools affect scan time and image quality before interpretation begins; I advise on acceleration and diagnostic trade-offs.

Layer 02

At interpretation

Triage, detection, decision-support and reporting tools. I assess whether a product fits the department's case mix, workflow and clinical question.

Radiology AI in clinical use

Hands-on experience with deployed AI tools.

Examples of systems used directly in routine clinical practice across triage, detection, decision support and reporting.

Products are named descriptively to indicate categories of software used in clinical practice. No endorsement, affiliation or commercial relationship is implied, and no institution is represented.

AI advisory

Matching the tool to the clinical question.

Most radiology AI products do what they claim. The harder question is whether a given tool answers the question a department actually has, on the case mix it actually sees, inside the workflow it actually runs. That judgement belongs to a radiologist who reads the same studies every day.

  • Helping select the radiology AI product that best answers the clinical question the customer is trying to solve
  • Clinical assessment of whether a tool's intended use matches the real case mix, patient population and reporting workflow of a given department
  • Clinical guidance during selection, implementation and ongoing monitoring after deployment
  • Structured clinical feedback to developers: how a tool behaves on an unselected case mix, and where it fails

Product categories worked with in clinical practice

  • Triage and worklist prioritisation — flagging time-critical findings and reordering the reading list
  • Detection — automated identification of findings on radiographs and CT
  • Decision support and quantification — structured assistance in chest CT interpretation and measurement
  • Reporting and workflow — report generation and workflow automation
